Well someone called Tom over on the Mini Cooper Register Forum fitted one to his MPi Mini.
He was having a fuel smell in the cabin, which he did eventually rectify and here's a link to that thread:-

History of the right hand tank?
I recently was lucky enough to purchase a 1966 Austin mini cooper in amazing condition. It passed its first MOT for four years with only a wheel bearing replaced! My quiery is does anybody know whether this car should have a right hand tank or not as it currently only has the standard left hand?Is there any way of finding out via chassis number reference?Any help will be much appreciated.

it wa an option on most cooper s, may of become standard later in production. other options were close ratio box and 3.4 final drive rather than 3.76. but lots of options were avalible from new, such as straight cut boxes ect. i assume its 1275 cooper s.

I believe 1966 was the year the right hand tank became standard fitment on the Cooper S.
The book 'Original Mini Cooper And Cooper S' would provide all the facts on chassis numbers and the like.
Or you could ask on the Mini Cooper Register forum.

mini cooper 1071s
I thought the right hand tank was optional until 1966 (2 years after the end of 1071 production). I know you get 1964 Ss with right hand tanks, so I dont think Id discount twin tanks on a genuine 1071. However, I am totally in the dark as to wether 63 Ss had the optional right hand tanks or not... However, its quite easy to make a 1071 block with a 1275 block and 1071 crankshaft... Ive been told time and time again, its the crankshaft people are after, and no wonder, I had a 1071 en40 crank that had done a lot of rallying, sat for some number of years in greased paper, and was still fine. Tough things are the mk1 and 2 S cranks!

Looking for a left hand spi fuel tank...
Mini Spares should stock a standard SPi fuel tank, or do you mean a right hand fuel tank to give it the classic Mini Cooper S look?

Twin Fuel tanks
8-10 mpg isnt that bad if youve got a big ol nasty large cc firebreathing A series that you hammer hard, that idles all wrong and is a bit rich to stop the engine going into meltdown.... If thats the case, Im guessing the Mini its in isnt a daily driver. Get a large capacity alloy tank made up, to fit the boot. Would probably cost as much as a new right hand tank! Wish I hadnt sold my original twin S tanks now... What size are the aftermarket right hand tanks? still the same 5.5 gallon design? Kevin

RE
Thats your breather pipe , it starts from the top of the tank and can be seen from inside the boot. It ends about 50mm after exiting the boot floor so it sounds about right. As for the smell check the black rubber hoses for any damage etc. If is doesn`t say for unleaded petrol on it replace it as a matter of urgency. Also check the bottom of the tank for weeping as they do rot out, just rub your hand under it and smell it. The smell is probably one of the three black hoses between your tank and carb. Also check for weeping around the float bowl.

Subs in a Mini
Bit of a long shot this, but I managed to get hold of a sub box out of a high line Range Rover (the older model before BMW got involved). This is an enclosed unit made of a heavy composite material with a 10 sub inside sitting at 45 degrees to the box. One side of the sub is sealed and the other side vented out a 4 diameter tube. The whole box is about the same size and shape as a fuel tank and fits a treat on the right hand side in the boot with the vent pointing up. It also has its own built in amp, so thats one thing less to worry about. Its not the sort of thing you can pick up easily, but if you spot a Range Rover in the scrappers, its worth a look for it.

Rear ended! Write off?
yeah if u get a good second hand boot lid, good secondhand rear subframe (pre or post 1976 depending on year of ur mini), new boot floor, rear valance, rear lower half pannel, new bumper. so thoses bits will cost around 200- 500 depending on if u buy new parts or second hand. welding and spraying £800 maybe. so your looking at prob 1300 if insurance company do it. if u bourt bits and welded it urself (plug weld with mig welder) and maybe even spray it urself you could do it for about 300. first empty fuel tank, ideally it would be best to remove one door and role car onto side on an old double matris. remove subframe, cut and weld boot floor. prepare boot floor for painting paint underside of floor refit replacement subframe. role car back to al 4 wheel grind off rear pannel lower half if an easy place to weld so around above the rear lights. weld new rear lower half pannel by spot/plug welding it to seam of side pannels and boot floor, weld join above lights, prepare for painting, paint rear and inside boot, fit door, boot lid, fuel tank and bumper and drive away.
practice welding welding before welding shell, get nice clean metal for welds.
if they say its a right off as they will have a book value for it that is prob low if you can show them prof that there value is wroung so mini mags with prices of others in then with any luck they will fix it. thats what my friends dad did with his daugthers mini and they fixed it.

Just to clarify,, this is the item i was looking at, part number XNB10007
but it looks like its for a right hand petrol tank, i will be needing the left hand one. they may have taken the photo from a differant angle tho.
il give them a call.. if replacing this doesnt fix my problem,, do you know what else it could be?. il proly fix the wiper park switch at the same time, cos my mini is one big eletrical joke,, not a single things works how it should, bar the horn.
Richie.
